Good morning everyone. We thought that today we would explain a little about when your candle tunnels, what causes it & how to avoid it! It is so frustrating to see your candle burning down the centre, leaving wax stuck to the sides & no longer attractive looking. Hopefully these little tips will help & prevent it from happening in the future

What is Candle Tunneling?

Candle tunnelling occurs when a candle burns down the center, leaving unburned wax stuck to the sides of the container. Instead of creating a beautiful, even melt pool across the entire surface, the wax remains trapped in a tunnel shape. This not only wastes wax but also diminishes the fragrance and overall effectiveness of the candle.

Causes of Candle Tunneling

Several factors contribute to candle tunneling

  1. Short Burn Times: Burning a candle for short periods (less than 1-2 hours) can lead to tunnelling because the wax doesn't have enough time to melt fully across the container.

  2. Drafts or Airflow: Excessive drafts or airflow around the candle can disrupt the burning process, leading to uneven melting and tunnelling.

Tips to Prevent Candle Tunneling

Now, let's explore effective strategies to prevent candle tunnelling and maximize your candle's burn time and fragrance throw:

  1. Trim the Wick: Before each burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. A longer wick can create excessive heat and cause tunnelling.

  2. Longer Burn Times: Allow your candle to burn for at least 2-3 hours or until the entire top layer of wax has melted into a pool reaching the edges of the container. Candles have a memory & if a full meltpool isn't established on the first burn future burns will only melt to this same place & tunnelling then begins on each light.

  3. Avoid Drafts: Place your candle away from drafty areas to maintain a steady burn. Drafts can cause uneven burning and promote tunnelling.

  4. Rotate Your Candle: To prevent tunnelling in candles with multiple wicks, rotate the candle periodically while burning to ensure all wicks are utilized evenly.
